Artist Bio

Catherine Opie

Catherine Opie (b. 1961, Sandusky, Ohio) received a BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1985, and an MFA from CalArts in 1988. Since 2001 she has been a Professor of Fine Art at UCLA. Known for her vibrant color photography, Opie examines various facets of American life, from the identities of individuals to subcultures and communities, to urban settings and majestic natural surroundings. Opie's work resonates with formalist qualities, reinforced by her detailed concern for light, composition, and the medium of photography. Opie’s work has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions. In 2008 the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York presented Catherine Opie: American Photographer, a mid-career survey of her work. Additionally, Opie has had solo exhibitions at institutions such Portraits and Landscapes, Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus (2015); Empty and Full, Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2011); Figure and Landscape, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2010); Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2006); Skyways and Icehouses, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2002); and the Saint Louis Art Museum (2000). Opie has been recognized with honors such as the Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artist Award, Washington University Freund Fellowship, CalArts Alpert Award in the Arts, Larry Aldrich Award, San Francisco Art Institute President's Award for Excellence, and United States Artist Fellowship. Opie is included in international public collections including Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; Miami Art Museum; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Tate, London. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
