Klara Kristalova (b. 1967, Czechoslovakia; lives and works in Norrtälje, Sweden) creates figurative ceramic sculptures that take on hybrid forms. Many of Kristalova’s works incorporate both aspects of the human body and elements of nature, such as animals, insects, flowers, and trees. Infused with uncanny details and observations from her daily life and surroundings, Kristalova’s figures constitute a juxtaposition of scale where minute details reflect the monumental impact of constant change. Her oeuvre is grounded in an exploration of transitional states essential to both human and ecological life, and her sculptures conjure a familiar yet fantastical presence that exudes raw emotion. Building a fictive world that bridges humanity, ecology, and fantasy, Kristalova’s sculptures undergird the omnipresence of change across all forms of life.

Crafted in the artist’s secluded studio in Norrtälje, Sweden, Kristalova’s rugged style evokes a sense of discomfort, mirroring the sensitive and porous emotional landscape one finds themselves in when weathering changes. The figures exist in a liminal state, often possessing both human and anthropomorphic qualities and perhaps challenging such distinctions altogether. 알렉스 프레거(1979년 미국 캘리포니아주 로스앤젤레스 출생)는 로스앤젤레스를 기반으로 활동하는 예술가이자 영화 제작자 및 각본가이다. 작가는 현실과 가공의 경계를 흐리게 하는 친숙하지만 낯선 이미지 및 영상으로 인간의 조건을 탐구하는 것으로 잘 알려져 있다. 지난 20여 년간 프레거는 필름 누아르, 테크니컬러 같은 황금기 시대의 영화 제작 기술과 고전 신화, 그리고 네덜란드 르네상스 화가인 히에로니무스 보쉬(Hieronymus Bosch)와 피터르 브뤼헐(Pieter Brugel)의 알레고리 회화 작품을 토대로 특유의 스타일을 구축했다. 그 결과 대규모를 띠는 작업이 작가를 대표하는 작업 형태가 되었다.

With his research-based and socially engaged practice, Robin Rhode (b. 1976, Cape Town, South Africa; lives and works in Berlin, Germany) engages the urban landscape to create complex, symbolically rich narratives that disrupt and transform their environments.

The artist is best known for his multi-panel works that deftly combine photography, performance, wall painting, and drawing. Negotiating the urban landscape, these photographs often depict silhouetted figures interacting with carefully composed wall paintings that the artist paints in public spaces, most often in the city of Johannesburg. In each succession of photographs, the choreographed movements of the individual or group appear to alter the two-dimensional renderings, compressing space and time and morphing the urban landscape into a fictional storyboard. Using the medium of photography to capture his painted and performative actions, Rhode disrupts the fixity of the wall, rendering it a mobile substrate that can be transported into a variety of contexts.

에르빈 부름(1954년 오스트리아 브루크안데어무어/스티리아 출생, 현재 빈과 림베르그에 거주 및 작업)은 1996-97년경부터 시작한 참여형 연작 <1분 조각 One Minute Sculpture>을 통해 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 작품에서 참여자들은 작가가 제공한 서면 혹은 그림 형식의 설명에 따라 의자, 양동이, 과일, 스웨터 같은 일상 속 물건들을 이용하여 행위하거나 자세를 취한다. 작품에서 찰나적 본질을 지닌 행위는 사진과 결합되는데, 이로써 작가는 일상과 퍼포먼스, 관람자와 참여자 간의 경계를 무너뜨리고 조각의 형식적 본질에 의문을 제기한다. 부름이 <1분 조각>에서 조각으로서 행위하는 신체의 가능성을 모색했다면, 이후 작업에서 그는 뒤틀린 소시지를 브론즈로 주조한 <추상 조각 Abstract Sculptures>이나 차의 형태를 부풀리거나 일그러뜨린 <팻 카 Fat Car>와 같이 일상에서 흔히 접하는 오브제를 불안정한 방식으로 의인화한다. 에르빈 부름은 체중을 증량하고 감축하는 물리적 행동을 조각적 제스처로 인식하여 신체적 팽창과 수축의 환영을 작품 속에 드러낸다. 작가의 작업에 있어 유머는 중요한 도구이지만, 그 이면에는 언제나 현대 문화에 대한 날카로운 비판이 내재해 있다. 특히 그의 작업은 자본주의가 미치는 영향과 그에 따른 사회적 압력을 주로 논하는데, 이는 작가의 내적 이상과 상반된 가치이다. 부름은 상위와 하위 영역의 경계에서 작업하며 이와 같은 이분법적 구도를 강조하고, 장르를 병합함으로써 작가의 관점에서 희화화된 가상 현실을 탐구한다.
