Lehmann Maupin and LITO Editions are proud to announce the release of a day in the life of a gourmand (2025), a limited edition of 20 prints by acclaimed Malawian-born, South Africa-based artist Billie Zangewa, whose work has garnered international recognition for its unique style and its ability to merge fine art with textile traditions. Based on Zangewa’s silk collage first unveiled at the inaugural edition of Art Basel Paris in 2024, the edition, which depicts Zangewa’s son having high tea at the iconic Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, represents a shift in focus in the artist’s work from self-examination and femininity to motherhood and the home.

This marks Zangewa’s first foray into LITO’s pioneering print technology. LITO, an Austria-based art publisher and printmaking company, has developed a new hybrid art form that, through its innovative and patented technology, merges digital innovation with artisanal precision to produce works that are both serial and unique.

In this edition, LITO brings Zangewa’s richly textured visual language into the hands of collectors in an accessible new format, while preserving the strength of her vision. Known for her intricate hand-stitched silk collages, Zangewa draws deeply from her own experience as a woman, mother, and artist. Often the heroine of her own figurative scenes, she uses portraiture to transform everyday actions into powerful expressions of identity and presence. A day in the life of gourmand (2025) captures the warmth and nuance of her work, translating its tactile elegance into a collectible edition for a new audience. Concurrently, Zangewa’s first institutional exhibition in South Africa is on view at the Norval Foundation through January 2026.

“The work is inspired by my son’s love of good food, which works for me because I love good food too. His sophisticated palate always surprises me. Working with LITO gave me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and imagine my work in a new format. They were patient with me and in the end we created something that I’m proud of and feel represents my creative vision.”

Billie Zangewa: a day in the life of a gourmand

Billie Zangewa (b. 1973, Blantyre, Malawi; lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa) creates collages composed of hand-stitched fragments of raw silk. These figurative compositions explore contemporary intersectional identity in an attempt to challenge the historical stereotype, objectification, and exploitation of the black female form.

Zangewa’s work is in several public and private collections including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa; JP Morgan Chase Art Collection, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom amongst others.
