For its debut participation in JINGART, Beijing, Lehmann Maupin will present new works by gallery artists McArthur Binion, Billy Childish, Mandy El-Sayegh, Gilbert & George, Shirazeh Houshiary, Lee Bul, Angel Otero, Lari Pittman, Do Ho Suh, and Nari Ward. Featuring a range of media, including painting, sculpture, and photography, this presentation highlights the gallery’s diverse program and showcases these artists’ commitment to defying traditional art-making practices and sociopolitical constructs.
In her Perdu works, Lee Bul explores the binary between the artificial and the organic, both conceptually and materially. Composed of organic and inorganic material such as mother-of-pearl, velvet, and acrylic paint, the artist’s otherworldly visions of fragmented bodies are seemingly caught in motion, at various distances and in differing detail. Recently, works from the Perdu series have been exhibited at Hong Kong Spotlight by Art Basel (2020), in the two-person exhibition, Recombinance: Mandy El-Sayegh and Lee Bul, at Lehmann Maupin New York, and in the artist’s major survey exhibition Lee Bul: Utopia Saved at the Manege Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia. Earlier this year, Lee Bul’s work was the subject of the solo exhibition Lee Bul: Beginning at the Seoul Museum of Art in South Korea.
