These works are inspired by W.E.B. Dubois’s autobiographical text “Dark Water.” The artist collective found a 1920 1st edition of this book, which consists of essays and short fiction about race, class and gender issues. The work consists of 24 individual pages from the 1st edition dipped in a solution of black watercolor and gold acrylic to the point where only the top part of the page and text are visible. The number 24 also reference the classic number of a Greek chorus or church choir, which further relates to the concept of K.O.S. as unique individuals that function together in harmony.
