Rhizome Seven on Seven Conference
Jennifer Steinkamp & Rana el Kaliouby
May 14, 2016
New Museum, New York
Presented by Rhizome, the Seven on Seven conference pairs seven leading artists with seven luminary technologists, and challenges them to make something new together – be it an application, artwork, provocation, or whatever they imagine. They unveil their creations, and discuss their process, at this intimate public event.
Jennifer Steinkamp employs computer animation and new media to create projection installations exploring architectural space, motion, and phenomenological perception. Her digitally animated works make use of the interplay between actual space and illusionistic space, creating environments in which the roles of the viewer and the object become blurred. She completed her BFA and MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, and also received an honorary PhD in 2011. Steinkamp has exhibited widely at major institutions and biennials worldwide, and her work can be found in numerous public and private collections.
Rana el Kaliouby is CSO and Cofounder of Affectiva, an emotion measurement technology company. At MIT, Rana spearheaded the applications of emotion-sensing and facial coding. She was recognized by Entrepreneur as one of the “7 Most Powerful Women To Watch In 2014”, inducted into the “Women in Engineering” Hall of Fame, and recipient of Technology Review’s “Top 35 Innovators Under 35” award. Rana holds a Ph.D. from the computer laboratory, University of Cambridge.
Rhizome is an art and technology organization based on the internet, and an affiliate organization of the New Museum. It supports contemporary art to create richer and more critical digital cultures, through programs online and off – including commissions, exhibitions, events, an online journal, and an archive of over 2000 born digital artworks.
