Tracey Emin

Biography

Tracey Emin (b. 1963, London, England) was raised in the seaside town of Margate on the English coast. After leaving school at an early age, Emin enrolled at the Maidstone College of Art in Kent at the age of twenty to study painting. She continued her studies in London where she completed a Master’s in painting at the Royal College of Art.

In 1999, Lehmann Maupin Gallery presented Tracey Emin’s first solo exhibition in the United States titled, Every Part of Me’s Bleeding. Following the acclaimed exhibition, Tracey Emin presented her infamous work “Bed” at the Tate Gallery for which she was shortlisted for the Turner Prize that same year. In the last decade, Emin has had three additional solo exhibitions at Lehmann Maupin, participated in the gallery’s first exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey, Five in Istanbul: A Selection of Artists from Lehmann Maupin Gallery, and Tracey Emin, Gilbert & George and Juergen Teller. Emin has exhibited extensively on an international level, most recently at the Hayward Gallery, London, where her midcareer retrospective Love Is What You Want has been widely received. The exhibition opened in May and will be on view through August 2011. We are also excited to announce Tracey Emin’s first solo exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, set to open in 2013 as well as a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL in December 2013.

Tracey Emin’s accolades and accomplishments are equally noteworthy. In 2007 the artist represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, becoming only the second female artist to do so. That same year, Emin was made a Royal Academician and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London, a Doctor of Letters from the University of Kent and Doctor of Philosophy from London Metropolitan University. In June 2011, the Olympic committee announced that Tracey Emin would be among twelve artists selected to design a poster for the 2012 Olympic games.

Emin's work can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Camden Arts Center, London, UK; Hara Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum van Loon, Amsterdam; National Portrait Gallery, London, UK; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; the Saatchi Collection, London, UK; the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis, MN; and the Tate Britain, which recently opened a room in their collection devoted entirely to Emin’s work.
