Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba
Biography
Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba (b. 1968, Tokyo, Japan) earned a MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art after receiving his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Nguyen-Hatsushiba's films explore Vietnamese history and national identity, and have referenced issues such as the displacement of Vietnamese "boat people" after the Vietnam War. The underwater setting for films such as Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam—Towards the Complex—For the Courageous, the Curious and the Cowards (2001) and Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas: Battle of Easel Point—Memorial Project Okinawa (2003) refer to Vietnam's relationship to water with its long coastline and river basins and to the country's folklore. He has had solo exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Wien, Austria (2003); the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rome (2003); the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2004); Lehmann Maupin Gallery (2007); the Asia Society (2008); The River Project at the Campbelltown Art Centre (2008); and the Arizona State University Art Museum (2009). His work has been included in numerous biennials, including the Shanghai Biennale, the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, and the Sao Paulo Biennale. Nguyen-Hatsushiba’s work was featured in the 2010 CUE: Artists’ Videos, Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver Canada. Additionally, the artist will exhibit at the 2011 Shanghai Biennale.
