Fascinated by allegories, fairy tales, and literature, and driven by a strong desire to collect, order, and classify information, Van Caeckenbergh’s work stems from a personal mythology through which he compiles an encyclopaedia of human nature. Animated by allegorical or autobiographical narratives, he often creates domestic spaces that suggest intimacy and universality. Van Caeckenbergh first created The Mouse Hole as a critique of the monumental scale which became synonymous with modern art. Although humble in size, when installed this work creates an environment and performs the primary function of art—to mark out territory—without employing gratuitous and excessive devices of enlarged scale.
