The Aurochs are part of a series of bronze animal sculptures that Childish has been making over the past few years, also including wild pigs, extinct wooly rhinos, and ice age horses. The aurochs were majestic wild cows that roamed Europe, Asia, and North Africa until their extinction in Poland in 1627. A self-proclaimed “Radical Traditionalist,” Childish has said, “The reason I honor tradition is that it provides a form and structure that allows freedom—the ego is subjugated and the requirements of the painting are met. Tradition is not to be worshipped or adored; it is a vehicle to take you to new places, or we could say to arrive at the perennial.” Similarly, the auroch sculptures reflect Childish's deep interest in the primal aesthetics of the bronze-making tradition and also evoke archeological artifacts.
