Sharjah Biennial 13 Reveals Artist Lineup for Act 1 in 2017
The Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) has announced a lineup of more than 60 artists for Act I of the upcoming Sharjah Biennial 13 (SB13), titled “Tamawuj,” which will take place from March 10 to June 12, 2017.
Act I, the biennial exhibition and program in Sharjah, is the first part of a two-act culmination of the radical five-part structure initiated by SB13 curator Christine Tohme – director of the non-profit organization Ashkal Alwan – which consists of an online depository of research material, four projects curated by four Interlocutors outside of the UAE, a year-long education program in Sharjah, a year-long online publishing platform, as well as the two-act public program.
The thematic focus of SB13 is grounded in the four keywords: water, crops, earth, and culinary. The first off-site project on the theme of water, consisting of a workshop taking place at the Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, will be launched by artist Kader Attia between January 8 and 9, 2017. The program related to crops in Istanbul will be led by curator Zeynep Oz on May 13, 2017; while curator Lara Khaldi will address the subject of earth in Ramallah on August 10, 2017. Finally, Ashkal Alwan will organize the closing Act II of the biennial alongside a project around the keyword of the culinary, both situated in Beirut, beginning October 15, 2017.
