Sharjah Biennial 13: Tamawuj
Kader Attia

Kader Attia's film Mimesis as Resistance (2013) will be included in Sharjah Biennial 13, Tamawuj, organized by Christine Tohme. Tohme draws on Sharjah’s unique positioning in the region in order to expand the biennial by inviting four "interlocutors" to curate projects across four other sites: Dakar, Senegal; Ramallah, Palestine; Istanbul, Turkey; and Beirut, Lebanon. The thematic focus of Sharjah Biennial 13 is rooted in four keywords: water, crops, earth, and culinary, which form the foundations of social interaction and exchange. From January 8-9, 2017, Attia will launch the first off-site project around water in Dakar, a workshop taking place at the Cheikh Anta Diop University.

Working in a wide range of media, including photography, video, sculpture, drawing and installation, Kader Attia reflects on the aesthetics and ethics of different cultures and takes a poetic and symbolic approach to exploring the repercussions of Western cultural hegemony and colonialism for non-Western societies.
