Lee Bul’s multifaceted artistic practice spans more than 20 years and encompasses drawing, performance, sculpture, installation and video. She is recognised for her technically precise, futuristic sculptures and architecturally influenced, large-scale, immersive installations. Lee Bul’s works deal with visionary narratives, and themes such as the legacy of modernism, the potential of technology, gender and sexuality, the limits of the human body and its interface with the mechanistic, the role of popular culture in the formation of identity, and humankind’s obsession with perfection.

 

Located in the middle of beautiful Sydney Harbour, a short ferry ride from Sydney’s CBD, world-heritage listed Cockatoo Island has been a Biennale venue since 1998.

 

As host to the Embassy of the Real the former convict settlement and shipyard offers a space for artists to explore how we perceive reality in our increasingly digitised era. Artists consider the spaces between the virtual and physical, as well as the physicality of the human body, with major works by:
