Goings on About Town: Ashley Bickerton
The New Yorker

The halcyon Neo-Geo virtuoso—twenty years gone Gauguin, and then some, in Bali—freshly stupefies genteel eyes and minds. Featured are blazingly colored portraits of daffily deranged young women in glopped impasto and printed digital imagery embellished with objects, including many cigarettes on lumpy, perforated fibreglass supports. A lurking formal discipline can make the works seem like failed attempts to produce god-awful messes. More orderly, at first glance, are glass eyeballs that harbor tiny, demon-ish phantasmagorias. Bickerton alarms and disarms. Imagine being thrown in a snake pit and finding that the scaly creatures want only to be your friends. Through Oct. 26.
