Press Release

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel Miami Beach 2009, 3 - 6 December 2009. The gallery will present a selection of works by Tracey Emin, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Mickalene Thomas and will feature special installations by Teresita Fernández and new Lehmann Maupin artist, Nari Ward.

Following the successful opening of her 4th New York exhibition with Lehmann Maupin, Only God Knows I'm Good, Tracey Emin will present works from the show including an electric green neon by the same title, large-scale embroideries and monoprints from the Rizzoli monograph, One Thousand Drawings. These works, intensely personal and revealing, explore the artist's reoccurring themes of love, sex, and lust. Emin's work is currently on view at Lehmann Maupin Gallery through 19 December; at Tate Modern in the exhibition Pop Life: Art in a Material World through January 2010; and in 2011 the Hayward Gallery will present the artist's first retrospective in England.

Known for his dramatic sculptural installations, Nari Ward composes his works of systematically collected material from his urban neighborhood. By revealing the numerous emotions inherent in found everyday objects, Ward's works examine issues surrounding race, poverty, and consumer culture. Ward's work is currently featured at the Studio Museum Harlem in a major survey entitled 30 Seconds off an Inch, on view through March 2010. The artist will have his first exhibition at Lehmann Maupin Gallery in February 2010.

Mickalene Thomas, known for her elaborate works composed with rhinestones, enamel and colorful acrylics, shows works that introduce a complex vision of what it means to be a woman and expand common definitions of beauty. Drawing from her long study of art history and the classical genre of portraiture, she has infused her knowledge with more recent influences of popular culture and Pop Art. Thomas will present a new work entitled Hudson River On My Mind, portraying a colorful landscape collage - in 2010, Thomas will participate in the Art Production Fund Residency in Giverny, where she will continue to explore the subject matter. Thomas's work is currently on view through 3 January, 2010, at the International Center of Photography in Dress Codes: The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video. Additionally, The Museum of Modern Art has commissioned Thomas to create a new work specifically for the façade of the 53rd street entrance, which will be on view in February 2010.

Teresita Fernández's new body of work, on view at Lehmann Maupin Gallery's Chelsea location through 19 December, is made entirely of graphite, establishing a unique and unconventional vocabulary with the material itself. Fernández's works reflect elements of sculpture and installation and redefine the notion of precisely what constitutes a drawing. In the work Sfumato, made of swarms of small pieces of graphite attached to the wall, the lustrous, gem-like pieces cast what appear to be shadows that are actually soft graphite marks drawn directly on the wall. The entire dynamic composition recalls sweeping atmospheric clouds, grand natural phenomena or epic meteor events. This body of work is featured in a solo exhibition at the Blanton Museum of Art in Texas and will travel on to the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art in early 2010.

Spanning more than two decades, the collaboration of Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of Survival) continues to challenge notions of art through their deep engagement with literature, historical texts, music, and contemporary art practice. The artists present a visual counterpoint to the venerable words of prominent social advocates including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Jacobs, Lagston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, and Malcolm X. ICA Philadelphia is currently showing the first major museum retrospective of work by Tim Rollins and K.O.S., which will be on view through 6 December, 2009.
