Lehmann Maupin would like to announce an exhibition of new work by German artist Jörg Sasse. This is Sasse's fourth one-person exhibition at Lehmann Maupin and it consists of photographs from the last two years.

Jörg Sasse graduated from the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf in 1988 where he studied with Bernd and Hilla Becher. He has since shown his work in numerous international exhibitions including solo shows at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Kunsthalle Bremen.

From his earlier images of mundane objects and architectural elements through his more recent works tending further towards abstraction, Sasse's emphasis on composition has remained constant. Through his focus on the purely formal aspects of the picture, Sasse's objective is the creation of a completely autonomous, or self-contained, image.

Sasse begins by selecting an image from his extensive archive of snapshots, some taken by friends or other amateur photographers. He then alters the negative using digital technology. Sasse sees the use of the computer for the manipulation of photographs as a refinement of alteration techniques that have been around as long as photography itself. Processing the image through the computer allows the artist greater control over the formal elements of the picture, though his hand remains concealed. The result is a form of picture making that bears a closer resemblance to painting than to photography.
