Artist Bio

Roberto Cuoghi

Roberto Cuoghi (b. 1973, Modena, Italy) is a multimedia artist, working in painting, sculpture, digital animation, and sound. He is regarded for his drastic project where he physically altered his appearance to become his father, which laid the groundwork for many works dealing with transformation, hybrids, tests of endurance, and violence.  His most recent work includes large-scale sound installations that create musical hybrids between the cultures of non-western and western communities, and ancient and current times.

Cuoghi has exhibited largely at an international level. His most recent solo exhibitions include da iā e pigalā a iā e iā o pigalā e pigalā, shown at the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2015), and Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2014). His first museum solo exhibition Šuillakku – corral version, a sound piece set in the time of the fall of the Assyrian empire was shown in the New Museum, New York, and ZOLOTO, Galleria Massimo De Carlo, Milan, Italy (2012), and the Hammer Museum, UCLA, Los Angeles, California (2011).

His work has been shown in numerous joint exhibitions at important international venues, such as Whitechapel Gallery, London (2013); The Encyclopedic Palace curated by Massimiliano Gioni, the 55th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2013); The Residue of Memory, curated by Heidi Zuckerman, Aspen Art Museum, Aspen (2012); 10000 Lives, curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, Korea (2010); Skin Fruit, curated by Jeff Koons, New Museum, New York (2010); Fare Mondi/Making Worlds, curated by Daniel Birnbaum, 53rd Venice Biennale, (2009); Fractured Figure, curated by Jeffrey Deitch, Deste Foundation Centre for Contemporary Art, Athens (2007); Sequence 1, curated by Alison Gingeras, Palazzo Grassi, Venice, Italy (2007); Of Mice and Men, curated by Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni, and Ali Subotnick, 4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2006).

He received a special mention for his work MEI GUI, featured in the Venice Biennale in 2009, and for BELINDA, featured in the Venice Biennale in 2013.

The artist lives and works in Milan, Italy.
