International Review of African American Art

Year in Review: We The People / Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia
By IRAAA

The We The People exhibition (September 20 – November 19, 2011) highlighted recent works by Nari Ward, who was in residence at the Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM). Ward examines contemporary issues that include citizenship, cultural consumption, discrimination and poverty. These concerns reflect his experiences growing up in Jamaica and his working life as an artist in Harlem.

Ward’s debut of his installation made in collaboration with FWM, We the People, transcribes the opening phrase of the United States Constitution on the museum wall using hand-dyed shoelaces. Ward “reclaims” these words from the Constitution by integrating the shoelaces into the text, as a hybrid material, revolutionizing the viewer’s reaction through the magnitude of the arrangement and adaptation of the piece.
