Jennifer Steinkamp

Biography

Jennifer Steinkamp (b. Denver, Colorado) a Los Angeles-based artist, employs computer animation and new media to create projection installations in order to explore ideas about architectural space, motion, and phenomenological perception. Her digitally animated works make use of the interplay between actual space and illusionistic space, thus creating environments in which the roles of the viewing subjects and the art objects become blurred. She has said, “As my ideas and the work developed, I found I could dematerialize architecture by combining light, space and movement.”

Her Work has been exhibited in exhibitions including Visual Music, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, and the Museum of Contemporar Art, Los Angeles, CA (2005); the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO (2007); Lehmann Maupin Gallery (2008), North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (2010); and in group exhibitions at the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2008); the San Antonio Museum of Art (2009); the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MN (2010), ARCO, Madrid (2010), Wild Things, Kunsthallen Brandts, Odense, Denmark (2010). Additionally, the artist has participated in the 8th Annual Istanbul Biennial and the 11th Cairo International Biennial in Egypt.

Steinkamp's work can be seen in public collections worldwide including, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Istanbul Modern in Turkey, the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, and the Towada Art Center in Japan, among other important private collections worldwide.

Steinkamp’s recent projects and exhibitions include Five in Istanbul: A Selection of Artists from Lehmann Maupin Gallery at the Borusan Muzik Evi in Istanbul, Turkey; Jennifer Steinkamp: Madame Curie at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego on view through the end of June 2011; and set design for Arnold Schoenberg’s Erwartung at the New York City Opera. In Novemeber 2011, the artist will participate in Prospect New Orleans, New Orleans, Louisiana. Jennifer Steinkamp lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
